One of the really good news out of Denmark this February, came from the municipality of Lemvig! An AI-based route optimization tool has significantly improved efficiency in home care services, reducing driving time by 44% in Lemvig Kommune. This technology, developed using the Adaptive Large Neighborhood Search (ALNS) method by Professor David Pisingerand Professor Stefan Røpke at DTU Management, ensures that caregivers spend less time on the road and more time providing care.

Beyond efficiency, one of the most meaningful impacts of this solution is the improved continuity in care. With optimized scheduling, elderly residents are more likely to see familiar caregivers, fostering stronger relationships and better health monitoring.

For David Pisinger, seeing his research make a real-world impact is a "dream scenario, for any researcher”.
"What’s great about this project is that we can ensure the elderly don’t feel like they’re in a train station where people just come and go but instead have the same caregivers visiting regularly. When social care feels like a revolving door, a lot is lost - not just in tracking the patients' health but also in the human connection."

This project, initially piloted by Lemvig Municipality in 2024 and fully implemented in January 2025, demonstrates how AI can enhance not only efficiency but also the quality of care. As more municipalities explore similar solutions, the potential for widespread improvement in home care services is enormous.
